My mother knew I was on odd terms with my father, but she insisted that I attend these "family meetings" where Vidilm spent candlemarks talking about hold business, and other trivialities that none of the younger children enjoyed listening to, in fact the only people who even pretended to show any interest in the meetings were my mother, and Vidilik, the eldest of us, and heir to my fathers holdings. I'm not even sure if he really cared, or if he just always feigned interest so father wouldn't disown him.
Anyways, I was sitting, dreaming of the lush wheat fields outside the hold walls, not listening to my father, when my daydreams were concluded by my father banging his mug on the table, and sending everyone off for Thread duty. I had forgotten that Thread was due to fall today, and to my surprise as my father dolled out the assignments for the fall, I was given one of the easier tasks, normally I was assigned to herding the runners inside before they were driven crazy with dragon fear, which is no pretty task. But today I was instructed to stay inside and assist Hildia with preparing the post-fall meal.
I was on my way to the kitchens when, I saw Thari, one of my favorite sisters, struggling with a heavy anthogree tank. Hurrying to her side, I lifted the burden from her shoulders and without thought, suggested that we switch assignments. Grinning from ear to ear, Thari hugged me, and with profuse gratitude hurried off towards the kitchens. sighing my resignation of the inevitability of the grueling work ahead, I again hoisted the tank to my shoulder, and trudged off towards the "front lines".
Hours Later, After Thread
Fall
Stumbling clumsily back to the hold, grime and soot covering
my face, I was surprised that, although I was physically tired, I was not as
mentally drained or sobered as I usually was by fall. The fact that there
were dragons overhead sent a wild energy through my
body. Someone touched my shoulder, startling me and causing me to turn and
face them. I whirled to see a
man wearing the shoulder knots of a blue/search rider. I gasped.
The bluerider grinned at my astonishment.
"Excuse me, but my name
is W'son and I am a searchrider for Dawn
Sisters Weyr, my Imalth said he could hear your thoughts while we were
fighting, and said that I should ask..." He stopped, hearing as his dragon
spoke to me.
Yes come with me to stand at Sr. Queen Gillith's... Doubt
clouded my mind, although my father and I were scarcely on good terms, he would
surely disapprove of any attempts I made to leave the hold. Not because he
would miss my company, but because he needed the extra hands to help out around
our small hold.
"I would love to, but I really should talk to my mother about it...my father couldn't care less." I replied eagerly but with a hint of regret.
...He will not mind, I have told him this is for the best. And I did sense that he would miss you, somewhat.
"Imalth already has, I'll help you load your stuff onto him." W'son said, casting a disapproving look at his dragon. As I ran to my little cot and gathered up my stuff I wondered about the dragonriders disapproving look, maybe the dragon was not supposed to talk to other people, I had never heard of dragon's talking to others, but maybe Imalth was more outgoing and sociable than other dragons.. I shrugged of the minor concern and hurried towards W'son and his dragon, I was getting out of here!

Physical Description: |
Average height, with almond shaped hazel eyes, and longish hair, Vidrik is neither muscular or overly skinny, his hands are skilled and precise with a brush, and his eyes quick and accurate. He is not overly noticeable in a crowd (he prefers it that way), and the only feature about him that people tend to notice is that his eyes never stay still, they always seem to be watching something or someone. | |
Brief Summary of Character |
Vidrik is idealistic and is always striving to help others. He is always first in line to help someone in need. Although he is very receptive to the feelings expressed by others, he finds in awkward to express his own inner feelings. Because of his own self-perceived expertise in dealing with others feelings he has trouble dealing with others giving him advice, and has a hard time applying the advice he gives to others, to himself. His self assured air causes others to react negatively, and he responds poorly to advice from others. His early interest in art caused some tension between himself and his father, who thinks that drawing is a "girly thing". His reaction to his fathers criticism was incredible hostility and withdrawal from his already limited and much disliked contact in monotonous family affairs. This subsequently affected his joy at being searched, and being able to leave his "dismal little hold". Vidrik also suffers from mild headaches that no amount of herbs from a healer can seem to cure. |
