I stood, watching, with the blistering wind throwing hot embers and ash into my face. I gazed into the charred remains of my home and felt salty tears drip purposefully down my cheeks, mixing with the soot that stained my otherwise pale face. As I watched the last of the building crumble and succumb to the blazing inferno around it, my tear laden eyes welling up and sharing with my cheeks the pain of this night. The golden flames, beautiful despite their devastating effect, licked up the sides of the blackened stone wall. Burning. I felt heavily garbed hands turn me away from the devastation and I looked up disparagingly to see the kindly face of my mother, softhearted and sympathetic. Standing by my side as we watched our house go up in crimson flames. Turning away from the glow of the fire I buried myself in her enveloping warmth, taking comfort in the presence of my siblings and parents, knowing that I was not alone.
Just as night gave into the
ever-present light of day, the crimson glow of the fire subsided overcome by the
morning hues of violet, scarlet and ginger that crawled cautiously across the
sky, welcoming a new day with promise of hope and new beginnings.
The wretched night was over, the
fire vanquished and our hope of a new life born anew. The dawning sun’s golden
rays slipped effortlessly over the horizon, lighting the world in a pristine and
naive way, unaware of the troubles of the night. And even with the dawning, help
arrived.
Our house had been small,
containing very few possessions, most of our meager wealth had been invested in
farm equipment: an ancient wooden plow and rickety wagon, as well as several
bags of seeds for the spring planting had all been lost to the fires ravages.
Many graciously volunteered their time and services to help us get back on our feet, and although we accepted their charity I know my mother detested taking what she had not rightfully earned. And although she wanted to refuse many of their offerings, we both knew that we would not have been able to rebuild our small hold to its former prosperity without the help of people who volunteered their time and energy to help us rebuild.
Included in the people who helped us rebuild our minor holding were several dragonriders who hailed from the surrounding area. One of which was a blue search rider from Tiamat Weyr who, after our immediate crisis was over, offered me a spot standing as a candidate for gold Bularith's clutch. My reaction was at first exhilaration at being offered such a life changing chance, and then concern for my family and guilt for leaving then during such hard times. However after much consideration and encouragement from my mother, I accepted the rider's offer and moved to Tiamat where I waited anxiously for the clutch to hatch.
