Laying on my cot in the apprentice barracks an idea came to
me. Leaping from my cot, I reached hurriedly to grab my paints and canvas
from under me, startling Okovie who had been resting on my chest. Grabbing
a stub of pencil, I quickly outlined the basic form of my newest painting.
Chirping curiously and circling over my head, Okovie expressed his interest. Irritated by
his childish behavior, I swatted irritated at him
with my brush. Pausing only momentarily to readjust my hold on the stub.
Finishing my rough sketch, I held it out to examine the quality of my work, and finding
it satisfactory, moved to sit cross-legged on my cot, my paints arranged in front
of me. Taking the brush that had been tucked behind my ear, I dipped it in
the nearest container, black. With long sweeping strokes, I filled a
corner of the canvas with the dark liquid, and with much practiced precision and
haste, cleaned my brush. Seeing the stillness of my shoulder, Oko thought
this an invitation, and upon trying to land on my left shoulder, promptly found
himself grappling for a hold as he was jarred loose. Dipping my brush into
another color, I watched in amazement as moved the brush back and forth,
creating a beautiful work. Suddenly, my shoulder was again jarred, as Oko
landed, pushing the brush in my hand along the canvas, leaving a long dark
line.
Screaming in outrage, I turned to strike the little beast, but he
flicked between just before my paintbrush would have surely have shattered his tiny
skull. Realizing the harm that could have been caused by my action, I
fell, crying to my bed. Moaning my remorse, and self-pity I wished I had
more control over my temper. I had seen others deal with a much more
angering situation and not even raise a finger in anger. Yet I had
almost struck her
beautiful blue down in the fury of the moment. Wiping the tears from
my eyes with my dirty tunic, I returned to painting, and upon finishing it, signed
it, eh. Feeling quite proud of myself for finishing a new work, I looked up
to see the sun nearly at zenith, and with a jolt realized I was late for a rehearsal
of the theater hall's most resent production.
Running as fast as I could, I reached the large open area that was home to the halls theater when I ran strait into a large green mass, blocking my way.
"I see you have met Irrawath," A voice chirruped cheerfully. "Forgive me, I am Cerlayn rider of green Irrawath, we are riding on search for Tarizal Weyr," frowning, and looking at me for a second, her eyes glazed over as she spoke to her dragon. "Irrawath believes you might have what it takes to be a candidate, would you be willing to come back to Tarizal Weyr with us and stand?"
Stammering uncharacteristically for someone so used to public speaking, I muttered a reply. "You really should ask the master in charge of my training, but I would be willing to. I have heard that many an artist has become famous in a Weyr, painting the wings upon wings of dragons."
"Good then, go and gather your belongings, we will leave as soon as you are ready."
Trooping obediently off, I wondered just what color of green I could use to paint a portrait of that brilliant jade hide.
Ehishanya impressed blue Gesporth at Tarizal
Weyr
Ehishanya's blue Gesporth has grown and is now a weyrling
Oh Gespie! You are such a silly little dragon! Ehishanya giggled as Okovie flew circles around Gesporth's head. While Gesporth desperately tried to follow his movement with his eyes, turning his head on all sorts of weird angles. Landing on the top of Gespoth's head, Okovie was startled when Gesporth sighed, sending the firelizard flying.
I am no longer so small. I have finally grown into my wings, and I no longer look like a plucked wherry Gesporth stated smugly.
No you aren't, you have grown into a big beautiful blue, and I love you! She blew kisses at the blue. Now what were you going to tell me??
I have found someone...
Have you know? Who did you find, oh great, wise, wonderful, beautiful, intelligent, gorgeous....
Oh do stop it Anya! This is rather important. I have found her!
Stopping, Ehishanya looked up into her dragon's whirling eyes startled by her dragons vehemence.
Who have you found Gespie?
Arlath.
Arlath?
Arlath is... well, she is Arlath, you will meet her tomorrow.
Tomorrow?
Yes tomorrow, you will like her.
***The Next Day***
Rising early Gesporth wondered what his rider would think of his new interest, he had yet to tell his rider that Arlath was due to rise, or that she had a very independent female rider. Seeing Ehishanya stir in her sleep Gesporth quieted his thoughts of Arlath and the surrounding issues and began projecting soothing thoughts of pleasant dreams. A slight grumble in an empty stomach stirred Gesporth to fly to the feeding grounds, where he disposed of several beasts before returning to a conscious but still drowsy rider. With an excited note in his mental voice he reminded his rider that today she was to meet Arlath.
I know we are meeting Arlath today Gespie, but please let me have some time to get ready first.
With that Ehishanya turned on her heal and marched some-what groggily to get dressed.
***Minutes Later***
Please hurry, you wouldn't want to make us late now would you?
Of course I would! Ehishanya replied tersely annoyed at her dragon's lack of patience. What is so special about this Arlath that you think she would disprove so much about us being late?
We shouldn't be late, it's rude. Hurry up.
Rushing the rest of her morning routine, Ehishanya mounted and without waiting Gesporth launched into the air, with a powerful down sweep he cleared the edge of their weyr, and within a few strokes of his wings, disappeared /between/.
***Andromeda Weyr, Mid-Morning***
Reappearing over Andromeda Weyr, Gesporth started a gentle downward spiral to the feeding grounds, where he had identified Arlath. Landing gently, he crouched so his rider could dismount then greeted Arlath warmly.
Sliding off Gesporth's side, Ehishanya stared at the green dragon that could only be Arlath. Landing roughly on the ground she watched as a young woman, no more then 20 turns, approached, her curly gold hair bouncing.
"You must be Ehishanya, I'm pleased to meet you, Arlath has told me so much about you." She smiled, her emerald green eyes sparkling in the morning sun.
"H-h-h-ello," Ehishanya stumbled over her words, "I..Gesporth..." calming herself she continued. "What I meant to say was, Gesporth never told me your name...."
"Surralia, but you can call me Lia." She smiled again warmly,
"Well then Lia, my name is Ehishanya. Most people find that is a bit of a mouthful so just call me Anya." She smiled back shyly.
From behind Surralia a small cheerful voice cried out. "Mama! Mama! Is she here? Can I see her? Is she here with Gespie? Gespie! You sure are a pretty dragon." A short figure, appearing no older then 3, he came running up to Surralia, his flaming red hair almost glowing in the morning sun. Bright green eyes twinkling he reached up and Lia picked him up. "Shhh... Ori, you are likely to wake up the whole Weyr." Then to Ehishanya. "Anya, this is my son Oryon." Looking back down to her son, cuddled in her arms. "Ori, this is Ehishanya, Gesporth's rider."
"Gespie is a funny color!" Ori proclaimed loudly.
Funny color? The short one should not talk about funny colors, look at the top of his head! It doesn't match the rest of him... Tell Lia that her son's head is malformed. She might want to have him checked by a healer.
Giggling Ehishanya repeated what Gesporth had thought. And watched as a smile slowly spread over Lia's face.
"Please tell Gesporth that Ori has never seen a blue dragon, that is why he thinks Gesporth looks funny. Ori is comparing Gesporth's color with Arlath's, anyone would think Gesporth looked funny if you told them that he and Arlath were the same." Lia explained, a serious look on her face.
Gespie is a very pretty color. Very complimentary to my own. Hearing Arlath's comment in her mind, Lia was startled, but refrained from telling Anya. Instead she turned to the young woman, four years her senior, and began a conversation.
They talked through the morning, and into the hazy afternoon. Ori listened carefully, as did the two dragons, both of them pleased by the growing friendship between the two. At the end of the day they agreed that they would like to visit again some time and with a promise to return Anya departed for Turquoise
***That Night***
Anya?
Yes Gespie?
I wish to fly Arlath.....she is rising soon at Tarizal.
What?!? Ehishanya yelled both mentally and aloud.
She fancies my color, you and her rider get along well enough. And besides you wouldn't mind would you? A starry eyed dragon looked pleadingly at Ehishanya.
But....But...
No but's, we are visiting my birth Weyr tomorrow to sign me up.
But what if you catch her? Ehishanya stammered in an exasperated tone.
Then I will be all the happier. Gesporth stated matter-of-factly.
I've heard the stories of what happens at mating flights! Lia is a girl!!
So is Arlath. He stated smugly.
Don't you get it? I have heard the stories, dragon passion will do all sorts of things to a person. That's all well and fine if you are matched male to male, female to female. But we, you and me, we are...
We will find a solution that is acceptable to all parties, in the mean time, we have to go to Tarizal tomorrow. I have a flight to sign up for.
Exasperated by her dragon's stubborn nature Ehishanya stormed off, unwilling to accept the inevitability of her situation.
I'm going to sleep. Get some rest, it will do you good, clear your head.
Get out of my head!! Leave me alone!! Ehishanya shrieked.
Good night Anya.
Get OUT!
The mental retort she was expecting never came, leaving Ehishanya to ponder her unique situation. Laying in her small cot she stared at the ceiling of her small weyr. What to do? What to do? Drifting off she dreamed of dragons in flight.
