Mating Flight - Sr. Queen Fananth and Bronze Halyaith
As recorded by Brina rider of Fananth
Brina knew the signs well, she had been instructed thoroughly on how to deal with Fananth's broodiness and change in temperament she also recognized the change in her dragons hide color. She was prepared to warn the other females, however few there were, away to prevent the injury of her dragon, and she knew that the male riders were just waiting for Fananth to blood her first kill. The whole Weyr was preparing for this mating flight and she was no exception. For days, she had been reinforcing her control over Fananth's moods, and had prevented several potentially dangerous situations.
However all this practicing, never prepared her for the moment when, mid afternoon, Fananth let out a blood curdling scream and swooped in on her unsuspecting prey. The heard beasts, upon hearing her screech scattered. An unfortunate beast was to slow and with a hard blow to the head from Fananth's hind legs, was swooped up and carried to a nearby ledge, where, she proceeded to blood it, with out any encouragement from her rider. Brina, sitting in her weyr, felt the warm blood of the beast running down her throat and the adrenaline pumping through her veins as Fananth pounced on another and then another herd beast, each time blooding her kill and taunting the bronze dragons with her every move.
Then, as she swooped in on her last victim she suddenly veered upwards and away from the insignificant bronzes below her. None would catch her today, not without a fight. She dropped then, suddenly, leaving 2 of her would be suitors behind. As she veered upwards again, rising high on a thermal, the leader stumbled and his place was taken by another of the pack. Brina noted triumphantly that yet another had dropped out of the running, but quickly turned her attention back to the flight in the air. Fananth twisted her neck around, hoping to catch a glimpse of how many she had out flown. She was not disappointed, only 2 remained. Then suddenly, talons grabbed her, and as she screamed in rage, who had deceived her so, making her think that they had given up, only to have them catch her. She clawed franticly at the bronze that was entrapping her so thoroughly, preventing her escape.
You might as well accept it, Brina states calmly to her dragon, I have.
I was to be un-catchable, Fananth crooned pitifully
I know dearest, but did you really want that? Brina replied smugly
Fananth knew she would have to admit defeat and received Halyaith
